Mount Airy is 35 miles north of Winston-Salem, 60 miles northwest of Greensboro and 100 miles north of Charlotte. Just three miles north is the Virginia border and 12 miles north of the city is the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Interstates 74 and 77 provide quick access to Charlotte and Columbia to the south and north into Virginia and Ohio. Interstate 74/US Highway 52 links Mount Airy directly to Winston-Salem, NC. Interstate 77 intersects Interstate 40, a major east-west route, 40 miles south of Mount Airy. National and international flights are provided by Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro (1 hour away) and Charlotte-Douglas International Airport in Charlotte (90 minutes from Mount Airy).
